2. What are Basic Computer Skills?

Basic computer skills are the fundamental abilities required to operate a computer, manage digital information, use common applications and perform everyday computing tasks safely and efficiently.

These skills form the foundation for more advanced activities such as programming, data analysis, digital design, networking and cybersecurity.

Examples:

Starting a computer, using a mouse, typing a document, saving a file, organising folders, searching for information, printing a document and connecting to a network.

4. Starting a Computer

Starting a computer involves powering the system and allowing its firmware and operating system to initialise.

General Steps

  1. Ensure the computer and required peripherals are connected properly.
  2. Switch on the power supply if applicable.
  3. Press the computer's power button.
  4. Wait while the system performs its startup process.
  5. Allow the operating system to load.
  6. Sign in using the appropriate account credentials.
Do not repeatedly press the power button while the computer is starting. If the system appears unresponsive, follow the appropriate troubleshooting procedure.

5. Understanding the Desktop

The desktop is the main graphical workspace presented by a desktop operating system after login.

A mouse is a pointing device used to interact with graphical elements on the screen.

Single Click Select an object or activate a control.
Double Click Usually opens an item such as a file or folder.
Right Click Usually opens a context menu.
Drag and Drop Move or manipulate an object by holding the mouse button while moving the pointer.
Scroll Move through content vertically or horizontally where supported.

11. Files

A file is a named collection of digital information stored on a computer or storage system.

Examples include documents, spreadsheets, images, audio files, videos, programs and databases.

A file extension gives useful information about a file's format, but the exact behaviour of a file depends on its format and the software used to open it.

13. Folders

A folder is a container used to organise files and, in most operating systems, other folders.

Why Use Folders?

14. Basic File and Folder Management

Create Create a new file or folder.
Open Access the contents of a file or folder.
Rename Change the name while retaining the underlying item.
Copy Create another copy while keeping the original.
Move Change the item's location.
Delete Remove an item from its current location.
Restore Recover an item from a system recycle/trash facility when available.

15. Saving a File

Saving stores the current state of a document or other file in persistent storage.

General Steps

  1. Open or create the document.
  2. Choose Save or Save As.
  3. Select the appropriate folder.
  4. Enter a meaningful file name.
  5. Select the desired file format if necessary.
  6. Confirm the save operation.
Develop the habit of saving important work regularly. For important files, maintain appropriate backups as well.

16. Save vs Save As

Save Save As
Usually updates the current file. Creates or saves a version under a specified name, location or format.
Useful for regularly saving changes. Useful when creating a copy or changing the file name, location or format.

17. Copying and Moving Files

Copy

Copying creates a duplicate while leaving the original file in its original location.

Move

Moving changes the location of the original file.

Example:

Copying a project to a USB drive leaves the original project on the computer. Moving it to another folder changes its location.

18. Deleting and Restoring Files

Deleted files may sometimes be moved to a Recycle Bin or Trash rather than immediately removed permanently.

  1. Select the file or folder.
  2. Choose Delete.
  3. Check the Recycle Bin/Trash if the item needs to be restored.
  4. Restore the item if the operating system provides that option.
Files deleted permanently, bypassing the Recycle Bin/Trash, or removed from storage may require backups or specialised recovery procedures. Recovery is not guaranteed.

19. Working with Applications

An application is software designed to perform tasks for the user.

Restarting shuts down the current operating system session and starts it again.

When Restarting Can Help

Save important work before restarting. Use the operating system's normal Restart command whenever possible.

  4. Use the operating system's Shut Down command.
  5. Wait until the system has completed shutdown.
Avoid switching off power abruptly while the operating system is running unless an emergency or system failure requires a forced shutdown.

A backup is an additional copy of data kept so that it can be recovered if the original is lost, damaged or corrupted.

Possible Backup Locations

A USB drive containing the only copy of a file is not a complete backup strategy. A backup should provide an additional copy separate from the original.

On a school computer, press the appropriate screen-lock shortcut before leaving the workstation unattended.
